Freedom Isn’t Just A Holiday
As I sit here at my desk listening to the pops and bangs of the traditional American 4th of July, I can’t help but ponder the ideal behind it all.
Independence.
We all know the history, July 4th was assigned to the day we Americans fought for, and won, our Independence from England’s rule. All the fireworks, sparklers, and star-spangled banners are a tribute to that victory. A grand achievement as a new nation.
But what does independence mean to us, 250 years later? Personally?
What victories have you claimed that won your independence? Taking that first step away from the bottle of liquor to claim a life not controlled by substance? Leaving an abusive relationship and being able to breathe a little lighter, sleep a little deeper?
Independence, in my mind, comes in so many different forms, it’s worth celebrating the year round, let alone a specific, all-encompassing freedom. Celebrate yourself daily for the battles you’ve fought and overcome, even if it’s passing on that piece of cake you know is not good for you.
Go ahead, light that firecracker, spark that victory over and over again.
You deserve it.
Happy Independence Day, in whatever form you make of it.
